A property owner has been hit in the pocket to the tune of £1,300 after ignoring a repair notice from Hyndburn council.

Anthony Ridgway Faulkes, of Sands Road, Rishton, was found guilty in his absence at Blackburn Magistrates Court of failing to comply with the notice.

It ordered him to make roofing and guttering repairs and install new doors, windows, rendering and yard walls at a derelict empty property on Spring Street in Rishton.

The notice was served on Faulkes in April 2014, and no action was taken by November 2014.

Faulkes, 49, was fined £400, ordered to pay costs of £860 and a £40 victim surcharge.

Coun Clare Cleary, portfolio holder for housing, said; “Where people refuse to bring their properties into a decent state of repair we always give them plenty of chances to do so, but where they refuse to comply we will take them to court.

“Mr Faulkes bought the property in 2010 and it has been declining ever since. Council officers have requested repairs over a period of time but Mr Faulkes did not make the repairs so a notice under section 79 of the Building Act 1984 was served, ultimately landing him in court with hefty fines and costs.”
