Emergency services have been called following reports of “exploding manhole covers” in Accrington.

Lancashire Police and the Fire and Rescue Service have been attending the incident on Cambridge Street and Windsor Street since earlier this afternoon.

Richard Edney, from the Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “We received a call around 2.44pm to reports of an explosion in an underground tunnel and two manhole covers had been ejected.

“We requested United Utilities and the police to come and manage traffic in the area.

“We believe there has been some sort of explosion in the sewer”.

Lancashire Police said they were alerted at 3.05pm and cordoned off the area.

No injuries have been reported to the police or fire and rescue service.

United Utilities have confirmed that engineers are on their way to the scene.
