Warning as crews rescue stranded pet

IT WAS a tail with a happy ending when firefighters rescued a dog after it became trapped under ice at a frozen lodge in Oswaldtwistle.
The springer spaniel had been taken for a walk by its owner to the Jackhouse lodge off Brookside Lane.
But while walking on the surface of the lodge the ice cracked and the dog fell through at around 7.30pm on Sunday.
Its owner was unable to rescue it and phoned the Fire Brigade which sent an engine from Accrington, along with an underwater rescue unit from Nelson in a bid to get the dog out.
They spent around 10 minutes battling to free the dog before they were able to release it using equipment including a special water-rescue sled.
Once it was freed, they took the dog into the fire engine and wrapped it up in blankets to keep it warm. It was soon reunited with its owner and officers say it was none the worse for its ordeal.
Watch manager Tony Spencer, of Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service, said: "We would like to warn people not to play on the ice. At this time of the year many lodges are iced over and although the ice may be thick around the edges, it is often thin in the middle."
