Conman robs woman, 94

30/ 4/2008

POLICE are appealing for information after a cruel conman tricked his way into the home of a 94-year-old woman.

The incident happened last Friday when a man pretending to be from the NHS called at the woman's home on Lancaster Avenue, Accrington.

He conned his way in and then distracted her before stealing £200 from her handbag, leaving her shocked and disturbed.

An investigation is underway and police are urging anyone with information to come forward.

The man is described as white with a local accent, and he said his name was David Smith.

Sgt Martin Kennedy said: “We are particularly interested in speaking to any other resident in the area who was visited by anyone posing as a representative from the NHS or other health care department on the afternoon of Friday 25 April and is concerned that this visitor may not have been legitimate.

“The elderly lady was left shocked and disturbed by the whole ordeal and I urge anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area, or who has any information to help with the investigation, to contact us.”

The incident is one of several bogus caller thefts in Hyndburn over the last few months.

Police advise elderly people never to let callers into their homes without first checking their identities.
