AN 80-YEAR-old woman has died after she was knocked down by a truck in Clayton-le-Moors on Tuesday afternoon.

Jenny Clarkson, of Springbrook House, Canal Street, was crossing at lights at the junction of Whalley Road and Blackburn Road at 4pm when she was hit by a tipper wagon turning left towards Rishton.

The impact was extremely serious and she was rushed to Royal Blackburn Hospital with severe leg injuries, but died after emergency surgery.

An air ambulance was also called and the carriageway closed off for three hours, causing rush hour traffic chaos in the area, with motorists leaving Accrington queueing virtually all the way back to Eastgate.

The truck driver, a 44-year-old man from the Burnley area, was unhurt but suffered severe shock.

Witnesses have been encouraged to contact the police on 01254 353210 or 01254 51212.
