Traffic worries over plans for 98 new homes

A CONSULTATION has been launched into plans to build 98 homes in the Spring Hill area of Accrington.

The planning application by Barratt Homes is for a mixture of housing on industrial land, fronting onto Chester Street, Stevenson Street West, Fairfield Street and Exchange Street.

The plans include parking space for two vehicles per house, with some pruning of trees and landscaping.

Barratt Homes believes the scheme will not have any detrimental impact on nearby properties in terms of loss of light or privacy. The main vehicular access would be from Stevenson Street West and Exchange Street, with a new road being created.

But Mr John Dean, of Exchange Street, said he was worried about the amount of traffic generated during and after construction as motorists currently park on both sides of the street, which has been narrowed by recent pavement widening.

He said: "Over the past 12 years I must have lost four or five car door mirrors.

"It’s just ridiculous.

"When wagons come round the corner I’ve sometimes had to wake all the neighbours up to move their cars and let them through.

"It can be a real problem."

Members of the public have until the end of today (Friday) to inspect copies of the plans at Planning Services, Scaitcliffe House, Ormerod Street, Accrington.

They can submit representations on the application to the same address.
