Bins wagons used to carry crime prevention message

25/ 6/2008

BIN wagons are being used to help spread crime prevention advice as they travel around the borough.

There has been a steady increase in thefts from vehicles across the borough, with offenders targeting high value electrical items such as satellite navigation systems. Police advise people to hide, or better still, remove items from vehicles.

It will see crime prevention advice on the sides of wagons.

Councillor Brian Roberts, chairman of the Community Safety Partnership, said: “This is yet another good example of partnership working within the borough where the police have a message to get across and the council has the means to help reach the residents.

“We are all concerned when innocent members of the public become victims but we all have a part to play in crime reduction. The council is pleased to be able to support this innovative idea.

Sargeant Simon Holderness said: “We have seen a significant increase in the theft of electronic equipment from vehicles, and the largest rise has been in the theft of satellite navigation equipment.
“By working with the public and targeting offenders we hope to reduce this type of offence.”
