DRIVERS in Church have seen extra police on the streets.

As part of the launch of Operation Pathway, officers pulled over drivers they felt were breaking the law, such as not wearing seatbelts or using mobile phones.

They then handed out road safety leaflets and, in some cases, issued tickets when offences had been committed.

Officers were specifically targeting young people and motorcyclists as they have been identified as the most vulnerable groups of road users.

PC James Cooper said: “We pulled over between 30 and 40 drivers in the first couple of hours and issued about 15 tickets.

“Henry Street in Church was chosen as the place to launch the campaign as it is an area that is statistically dangerous.”

Chief Inspector Damian Darcy, who is leading the operation for the Eastern Division, said: “While much of this operation will be focused on enforcing the rules of the road, Operation Pathway is also about educating people and encouraging them to alter the manner of their driving according to the conditions of the road.”
