A nine-year-old Huncoat boy has died in hospital after being hit by a car outside his home on Monday.

Philip Holmes thought to have been playing outside his home in Station Road, Huncoat at around 5.20pm on Monday when the accident happened.

It is thought he stepped into the path of a Ford Focus after squeezing past a parked car and van.

The driver of the Ford Focus was heading along Station Road towards Lowergate Road.

The Huncoat Primary School pupil suffered head injuries and was thought to be unconscious when paramedics arrived on the scene.

He was transferred from the Royal Blackburn Hospital to Manchester Children's Hospital, where he sadly died on Tuesday night.

The driver has not been arrested.

Huncoat ward Councillor Paul Gott, who lives on Station Road said: "This is a really sad incident. I saw the ambulance and police cars arrive and close the road off. My thoughts are with the little boy and his family."
