ACCRINGTON and its neighbouring towns in Hyndburn have been breeding grounds for many a famous face in the world of entertainment, sport and literature.

Among a few notables who come to mind are TV and radio comedian Jim Bowen; Lottery star Mystic Meg; Julie Hesmondhalgh who played 'Coronation Street''s Hayley Cropper; Vicky Entwistle who plays Janice Battersby in the same soap; 'Liver Birds' actress Polly James and 60s pop star Jon Anderson, who was a member of the top group Yes.

England hockey player Val Robinson; cyclists Jack Chew and Alan Ramsbottom (after whom a road is named in Great Harwood); football referees David Richardson and Ivan Smith; and long distance runner Ron Hill.

Footballers David Dunn and Mike Duxbury; controversial novelist Jeanette Winterson whose 'Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit' caused a stir in her home town; composer Sir Harrison Birtwistle whose works have flummoxed many a critic and music lover; and John Tomlinson, Wagnerian bass opera singer.

Ex-England cricket coach David Lloyd; ex-Accrington, Lancashire and England batsman Graeme Fowler; Lancashire bowler Peter Martin and chairman of Lancashire CC Jack Simmons.
