BNP set to stand in Hyndburn

18/ 2/2003

THE right-wing British National Party has confirmed that it may contest the forthcoming local elections in Hyndburn.

The party's election agent Tony Lecomber said: "The pace of public opinion is changing so quickly that we have had all manner of people coming forward to offer us help.

"In Hyndburn we currently have something of a 'hole'. It is the only place in Lancashire where we are not organised but I believe something is being done at this very moment to try and change this.''

The arrival of BNP leaflets through the doors of a number of homes in Huncoat several months ago prompted speculation that the organisation, noted for its hard-line attitudes on asylum seekers and race issues, might be fielding a candidate in the area.

A string of recent local election successes has seen one its councillors elected in the Mill Hill ward of Blackburn, while three more now have seats on Burnley Council.
