Council divided over art schemes

HYNDBURN councillors are divided over the plans to site artwork on the Coppice.

Council leader Peter Britcliffe said: "The designs are nowhere near as outrageous as last time and I would like to see what feedback we get from the public consultation.

"One of the good things about the scheme is that if we do go ahead, some of the paths on the Coppice could be refurbished. I would ask that people give their thoughts on it."

Labour leader Councillor Jean Battle was less enthusiastic about the designs. She said: "I have looked at them and I am less impressed by these than I was by the original ones.

"Some of them are quite boring and they do not really inspire me to want to put one on the Coppice."

The cash for the chosen design is being provided by the North West Development Agency.

Councillor Brian Walmsley said: "The designs have nothing to do with council tax because they are being funded from other sources.

"We have been given the money to spend on this and we cannot spend it on anything else. It has been earmarked for this project."
