MP backs ID cards in crucial Commons vote

30/ 6/2005

HYNDBURN'S MP Greg Pope backed the controversial scheme to introduce identity cards in Tuesday's dramatic House of Commons debate.

A revolt by 20 Labour MPs reduced the Government's majority to just 31.

But Mr Pope was not one of the rebels despite fears that the cost of the cards could soar from the official estimate of £100 to over £300.

He said: "In principle I am greatly in favour of identity cards, and I think that law-abiding citizens have absolutely nothing to worry about.

"It is only illegal immigrants and terrorists who should be getting a little concerned.

"I do, however, have some concerns with regard to the cost of the scheme.

"I think people may object to paying hundreds of pounds for the cards and this is where the difficulty lies. It is the complexity of the card and computer systems which will determine the cost.

"I also don't think that the state should have to fork out for the whole bill and I am sure changes will be made as the Government definitely seems to be in listening mode."

I for one do not agree with personal Identity Cards. We already have photo i.d. on passports and driving licences. Why do we need more? Why should we pay for more. If this government or any other cannot sort the issue of illegal immigrants/terrorists, then it is time for a change to a government who can without the need to rip off the honest ordinary folk of Great Britain.

Originaly I supported the ID Card, it was only when I watched the debates, and read in the papers the implications of having to produce this biometric card as proof of a right to reside in this country did I get an uneasy fealing about the long term aspects of the stealth survelance implications
