Bookworms win place at top ceremony

PUPILS from an Accrington primary school attended a prestigious ceremony in London after winning a national competition.

The Year 1 students at Woodnook Primary were chosen from thousands of entrants from around the country to attend the 21st Nestle Children's Book Prize award ceremony at the British Library.

The children were among 150 chosen to be judges for the book prize, which is made to writers and illustrators of the top children's books published in Britain each year.

They voted for their favourite author and completed a project based on their winning book.

This included writing reviews, creating artwork based on the study and explaining why they chose that particular book.

The 27 children, all aged five, were special guests at the awards ceremony in London to watch the authors receiving their prizes.

They were able to meet the authors and TV presenter Michael Absalom, who hosted the event.

Two children took part in the ceremony, announcing the winning authors and presenting them with a prize on stage.

Class teacher Shirley Seddon said: "The pupils were thrilled when they heard about their success.

"They were very excited about their trip to London and the awards ceremony."
