Estate lights up thanks to new power cable

FAMILIES on the new Whinney Hill Estate in Altham are finally able to celebrate Christmas now electricity supplies have been restored to their homes.

Christmas lights and decorations have been appearing on the estate after United Utilities fixed a problem which had plunged 200 homes into darkness on three separate occasions.

The company has recently finished laying 500 metres of new cable which should guarantee a more constant and reliable supply to the estate.

Mother-of-three Maria Wyatt, of Epping Avenue, who spoke to the Observer during the last power cut three weeks ago, said: "Everybody's been busy putting up their Christmas lights so I hope we don't have any more problems. The power cuts were really awful and it really gets you down when it's so cold and you don't have any electricity.

"I've been a bit sceptical about putting up my lights because I didn't have confidence in the power supply but since the new cable has been put in it's been fine."

A spokesman for United Utilities said: "We would like to apologise again for the inconvenience caused to our customers and thank them for their patience during the laying of the new cable.

"The cable is stronger and can cope with a bigger load which should give the area a more robust supply of electricity. We are also monitoring the new cable to see if it is performing well and coping with the demands put upon it.

"It is unlikely that any residents will be entitled to compensation in the form of a guaranteed service payment as the power wasn't off for 18 hours or more at any one time."

Once again United Utillities are glossing over the problems. As a resident I can confirm that in January/February 2005 our power was off from 6:10pm one day until 2:45pm the following day. At that time I contacted united utillities and was told no compensation was due as the failure of the supply was down to a sub standard cable fitted by the builder who has since liquidated. So do I take it United Utillities are indeed liable after all. Perhaps more residents can write in and you could take it up with UU on our behalf.
