Faces of the Pals

PRIVATE Pollard, left, and Private Ernest Place with their girlfriends. Ernest was killed on the first day of the Battle of the Somme on 1 July 1916.

A PHOTOGRAPH of B Company (District) taken in February 1915 before the Pals left for training in Caernarfon. It was taken in the Accrington Ambulance Drill Hall.

ANOTHER group of Pals pose smartly for the camera, little suspecting the dreadful fate that awaited them.

LIEUTENANT Colonel A W Rickman who, with the exception of short breaks, commanded the Pals Battalion throughout the war. He died in a tragic accident involving an electricity generator in 1925 aged 51.
