Six schools across the borough have been hit by industrial action by a teaching union today.

The National Union of Teachers (NUT) is staging a strike for members over ongoing disputes with the government over pay packets and workload.

Lancashire County Council is reporting that at least 44 schools across the county are closed or partially closed today.

Peel Park Primary and St Mary Magdalen's Church of England Primary School in Accrington, and Moor End Community Primary School in Oswaldtwistle are both closed, with Hollins Technology College, Oswaldtwistle White Ash School and Benjamin Hargreaves CE Primary in Accrington also partially affected.

In a letter to parents, Hollins headteacher Steve Campbell said: “As a consequence of this action I will have to close the school for pupils in years seven and nine. Schools will be open as normal for years eight and ten and year seven parents’ evening will still take place however, all staff may not be present. I apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your continuing support.”

Benjamin Hargreaves CofE Primary School. The school is shut to years three, four and five.

White Ash School. Closed to nursery, and classes two, three and seven.
