ACCRINGTON and its neighbouring towns in Hyndburn have been
breeding grounds for many a famous face in the world of
entertainment, sport and literature.
LIKE most of Britain in the Dark Ages, the Accrington area was a
rural district with just a scattering of homesteads and small farms
inhabited by Saxon tribes living off the land.
UNTIL the advent of the Industrial Revolution, the Accrington
area was an isolated rural district, but with a plentiful supply of
water and damp weather, it would play a key role in the development
of the modern world.
THE inventor of the Spinning Jenny, James Hargreaves, has a very
special place in the history of the cotton industry. Together with
the fly-shuttle, invented by John Kay, the Spinning Jenny made
