Thousands of people are expected to gather for a Guy Fawkes bonfire and fireworks at displays this weekend.

Organisers of Saturday’s event at Accrington Cricket Club say they expect this year to be ‘bigger and better than ever’ with a larger budget for the fireworks display.

The popular annual event has been organised by the three local Hyndburn Rotary clubs, Accrington, Church and Oswaldtwistle, Great Harwood and Rishton, with up to 5,000 people expected to attend.

Jacquie Baldwin, of the bonfire committee, has urged people to pre-buy their tickets to avoid queues on the night.

She said: “We are definitely hoping for good weather and for people to get their tickets early so they can get in really quick. We have increased the budget for the fireworks so it should be more spectacular than normal.

“The Mayor will be there to put the first match on the bonfire. It was a massive bonfire last year and we want to emulate that again this year.”

Jacquie said the event will also help reduce risk of accidents and injuries at residents’ homes.

She said: “One of the important things having a community bonfire is it saves people having accidents with fireworks in their own homes and gardens. It’s a lot more safer and controlled and also brings people together for a great night.”

The event will be held on Saturday, November 7 at the cricket club on Thorneyholme Road.

The gates will open at 6.30pm and the bonfire will be lit at 7pm.

Admission at the gate will be £3 for adults and £2 for children, however advance tickets from loal establishments including the cricket club are 50p cheaper.

This year the proceeds will go to the four local cadet forces that provide help to the Rotary clubs throughout the year: the Sea Cadets, the Army Cadets, the Royal Air Force Cadets and the Volunteer Police Cadets.

Baxenden Golf Club has organised a bonfire night and fireworks display on Friday, November 6. The bonfire will be lit at 6.30pm and food and refreshments are available.

Enfield Cricket Club will also hold a bonfire on Friday, November 6 from 6pm with a fireworks display at 7.30pm.
