Thousands of people are set to enjoy a spectacular bonfire night and fireworks display this weekend.

Organisers of Saturday’s event at Accrington Cricket Club are hoping for a huge turnout and are urging families to pre-buy their tickets to avoid queues on the night.

The popular annual event has been organised by the three local Hyndburn Rotary clubs, Accrington, Church and Oswaldtwistle, Great Harwood and Rishton, with up to 4,000 people expected.

Jacquie Baldwin, of the bonfire committee, said: “We are hoping for fine or at least decent weather for a start. That’s the key thing but unfortunately it out of our hands.

“We normally get about 3,000 and we would like a really good turnout of between 3,000 and 4,000.

“We do it to make sure that local people have a really good firework display which they might not be able to afford themselves and to keep children safe.

“With having bonfires and firework displays in the back garden in can be quite dangerous so an organised display is always safer.

“We always get a really good display of fireworks. We have tried to keep the costs down as much as we can. You can buy tickets in advance so you don’t have to queue on the night. There are quite a lot of local outlets selling them.”

The gates will open at 6.30pm on November 5 with the bonfir lit at 7pm and the fireworks display starting at 7.30pm.

Jacquie said the proceeds from this year’s event will go towards Broadfield Specialist School in Oswaldtwistle and to provide a disabled sailing boat for local people at the East Lancashire Sailing Club in Rishton.

Enfield Cricket Club will also hold a bonfire on Friday, November 4 from 6pm. Entry costs £2 for adults and £1 for children.

A family firework party will take place at Trinity Community Church on Christ Church Street in Accrington. It will start at 6pm on Saturday, November 5 and entry is free.
