A train has collided with a motorbike left on the line near Accrington railway station.

The collision happened at 6.18am this morning and affected the 5.41am Colne to Blackpool South train as it was slowing into the station.

No injuries were reported however the train was delayed for 45 minutes before being taken to Blackpool for further inspection.

The incident caused massive disruption to trains travelling between Blackpool South and Colne and Blackpool North and Burnley Manchester Road.

The line was reopened just after 7am and the matter has been reported to British Transport Police (BTP).

A Northern rail spokesperson said: “A two-car train struck a motorbike that was left on the railway tracks somewhere between Huncoat and Accrington.

“The driver had a look to see what damage was caused and the train was there for about 45 minutes which caused delays.

“It happened as the train was on approach and slowing to Accrington so was not travelling at full line speed.

“It is now being investigated by BTP and the bike could have been stolen and left abandoned.

“Something like that is extremely dangerous and we were very lucky no one was injured.”
