A town centre shop has been closed off for emergency structural repairs.

The Observer revealed yesterday how police were called to the Boots pharmacy shop on Broadway in Accrington and set up a cordon to protect passers-by.

Police were called by Hyndburn Council to secure that part of the road.

A metal security fence has now been installed and bosses at the shop have placed a sign informing customers how to make alternative arrangements.

The sign said: “We apologise for any inconvenience whilst structural repairs take place.

“Prescriptions can be handed into Boots colleagues next door in Costa Coffee.

“They will also answer any queries or alternatively you can call 07825 142136.”

Hyndburn council confirmed that Building Control Officers have arranged to have the area around the Boots building secured as a precaution due to the risk of falling masonry with forecasted high winds and have served a section 78 notice.

A spokesman added: "The owners and landlord are working towards rectifying the building defect and we are liaising closely with them.”
