Children and adults across the borough got into the spirit of Red Nose Day by donning fancy dress to help raise money for Comic Relief.

The charity’s theme this year was ‘making your face funny for money’.

And youngsters did not disappoint as they joined in the spirit of the day sporting facial disguises, with a tiger and an Oompa Lumpa also doing their bit for the cause.

Little Tinkers Day Nursery in Accrington held a jungle-themed day for which they have asked each child’s parents for a £2 donation.

On the menu there was face painting, a chocolate hunt and jungle biscuits.

Emma Leech, owner, said: “We just wanted to do something different.

“The children are really enjoying the face painting, especially.”

Pupils at St Bartholomew’s primary school in Great Harwood raised £144 while youngsters at St Peter and St Paul’s primary school in Accrington and St John’s school in Baxenden enjoyed dressing up ‘something funny for money’.

Christina Regan, headteacher at St John’s, said: “All pupils and staff, including support staff and site supervisor, joined in the fun and we have raised in the region of £200 for this worthy cause.”

Becky Lord, nursery manager at First Class Childcare Centre in Clayton-le-Moors, said they celebrated Red Nose Day with ‘lots of activities’ including making masks, glasses, playing in red paint and glitter, and making play dough noses.

They also enjoyed celebrating Mother’s Day.

Students at Hollins Technology College held their own Great Comic Relief Bake Off and children and staff also wore something red for money.

Comic Relief, founded 30 years ago, supports organisations that help both young and old people and very poor areas.

The money raised for Red Nose Day is spent by Comic Relief to transform the lives of millions of people, both at home in the UK and across Africa.

Since the Red Nose Day appeal in 2013, the charity has raised more than £1 billion.
