A’ big clean up day’ has been held in Great Harwood.

Around 25 volunteers carried out litter picking in two areas and removed more than 50 bags of rubbish.

The clean-up took place around Windsor Park recreation ground and the ‘White Path’ - old railway line - from the Royal to the Victoria.

Peter Holden, of the Great Harwood Community Action Group, said more than 50 bags of rubbish were collected, however there is still a similar amount that needs to be picked up.

He said: “The Rotary Club of Great Harwood and Rishton organised the event and provided volunteers along with the Community Action Group and the area’s Police Cadets.

“Thanks to all these volunteers and to Hyndburn council and the Prospects Foundation for providing the tools that made it possible.”

David Shaw, of the Great Harwood and Rishton Rotary Club, said: “Despite the poor weather conditions, around 25 hardy souls turned out for the event. The Rotary club would like to thank the volunteers from the various community action groups who attended, along with the Cadets.

“Further work still remains, and a similar event is proposed to take place in the future.”

Several litter clean ups were previously held in Great Harwood in 2013 organised by local councillors and supported by neighbourhood police officers which filled several skips of rubbish.
