OVER 370 runners hit the Hyndburn streets on Sunday to take part in the Accrington 10k.

Starting out on Burnley Road by the Whitakers Arms pub, they took on the challenging 10-kilometre course, which wound through Huncoat and Clayton-le-Moors before finishing at Accrington Cricket Club on Thorneyholme Road.

A total of 337 made it to the finish, which was the biggest turn-out since 2008, when 342 took part.

That was largely down to Burnden Road Runners, with 53 of their members entering the event, which is organised by Accrington Road Runners.

Suzanne Bailey was the stand-out performer for the host club as she finished third lady in a time of 42 minutes and 51 seconds, just two seconds behind Claire Vincent of Clayton-le-Moors Harriers.

The winning lady was Rachel Wood of Blackburn Harriers in 41:35.

Blackburn also had the mens’ winner, with Ben Fish crossing the line first in 32:52.

He was followed in by Alasdair McLeod of Scotland’s Shettleston AC (33:51), while Clayton-le-Moors’ Jonny McCann (pictured above, vest number 147) was next home in 34:47, with Douglas Tullie (number 47) just one second behind.

Blackburn’s Matt Nuttall (number 202) was fifth overall in 34:58 to top the V45 category while Chris Nicoll rounded out the mens’ first six and seventh-placed Rich Smith (36:03) was the V40 winner Ed Nicoll (number 114) won the V50 section in 36:21, crossing 10th overall while Burnden’s Keith Thomas took the V55 prize with 40:38, 31st overall.

The ladies’ first six was completed by Rebecca Harding, Sarah Tipler and Gwen Kinloch, also the ladies’ V50 winner.

The day’s other prize winners included: Steve Biscomb (Mens V60), Peter Wilkinson (Mens V65), Rowena Doherty (Lady V35), Kirsty Normanton (Lady V40), Heath Eynon (Lady V45), Joan Jackson (Lady V55), Jennifer Adams (Lady V60).
