ACCRINGTON and Great Harwood could both clinch the Lancashire and Ribblesdale League titles this weekend as their season comes to an exciting end.

Harwood bowler Stuart Maher is hoping there will approve a special Great Harwood Bank Holiday if they clinch the Ribblesdale League title after a 108-year-wait.

Accrington’s wait is only since 1975 but, after finishing bottom last season and almost going out of business, it is a rags to riches story for the Lancashire League side.

Harwood, 14 points clear, face main title contenders Padiham tomorrow and if they claim the maximum 12 points and their rivals get nothing then the coveted crown is theirs.

"We are not counting anything as I have been in this situation before, in my younger days, where were top on the Saturday night but we lost the last game the next day and we finished fourth," said Maher. "But we do know it is in our hands and we know what we have to do. If we win and bowl them out and they do not pick up any bonus points then the title is ours.

"If it doesn’t happen, it goes to Sunday against Barnoldswick to get the points.

"There will be at least a week long party if we do win it and we will have to have a Bank Holiday in Harwood as it has taken us so long to do it!

"But, although everyone is happy at the club, we won’t get carried away until we have definitely won it."

Accrington, 17 points clear at the top, come up against their main title rivals Rawtenstall tomorrow in the final weekend of their season.

If they win, the league crown will go alongside the Worsley Cup they won earlier this season.

"It is a big game for us tomorrow," said captain David Ormerod. "Rawtenstall have pushed us hard all season and now it is down to the last weekend.

"We are obviously in the driving seat but we won’t take anything for granted.

"It feels like a long season now but it has been fruitful with the Worsley Cup and, whatever happens now, we will either get the league championship or Holland Cup for finishing second.

"There is a great set of lads at the club with a good camaraderie and we just want to cross the finishing line now.

"The league title would be the tin hat on everything we have done this season. I am proud of the players as there has been a lot of talk banded around all season from people saying the bubble will burst and that we couldn’t last the pace.

"We haven’t reacted to it off the field but have shown people on the field."

If the rain comes down this weekend, Accrington will seal the win tomorrow while Harwood’s title chase will go down to Sunday.

"If we can win our league and Great Harwood win theirs then we just need Accrington Stanley to win League Two," added Ormerod.
