Documents sent to FA

23/ 5/2008

ACCRINGTON Stanley have sent off all the information asked for by the Football Association as the FA continues their inquiry into the "irregular betting" on the Reds’ final match with Bury.

An unusually high amount of nearly £300,000 was bet on a Bury victory - they won 2-0 - on May 3 which prompted the bookmakers to alert the FA.

"When they first contacted us they asked for the names, addresses, mobile numbers, home numbers, e-mails and almost every detail of all the players and staff connected with Accrington," said chairman Eric Whalley.

"We have got all this together and have now sent it off.

"We don’t mind doing that but the main thing which disappoints me is that our name was mentioned.

"Apparently, the Gambling Commission are investigating high bets on other sports like tennis but you do not hear any names.

"But our name is out in the open and we now have this hanging over our head which could stop something like a sponsorship deal.

"And it is damning for the club, especially as, as far as I am concerned, the staff are innocent.

"And if any players are found to be involved, then they won’t be our problem anymore."

The FA are still investigating the matter.
