Oy, ref!
Ian Waterhouse4/ 4/2008
EXTREME pressure, some abuse and massive scrutiny – all in a day's work for a top-flight referee. But what is the situation in Hyndburn for the men in black?
While the likes of Ashley Cole and Javier Mascherano may not be gracing the parks of the area, the job of a referee can still be just as difficult - and this has led to a shortage of men in the middle, especially at grassroots level.
Is 40 months in jail an adequate sentence for a bottle attacker who left her victim scarred for life?

Football Cowardice
Went for the Referee
At Blackburn county Police Court on Wednesday, James Chadwick and Joseph Yates, spectators at a football match played between Great Harwood and Accrington Stanley, were summoned for assaulting James Aitkin, of Hapton, the referee in the match. it seemed that after the match a large crowd made a rush for the referee and pelted him with stones and mud. Complainant was pelted with sods from the ground to the railway station, a distance of a mile and a quarter, and was covered with mud from head to foot. The magistrates inflicted fines, adding that future cases would be severely dealt with. A great deal of cowardice, instead of manliness, was being shown in connection with football.
