ACCRINGTON Stanley fans team continued their goal-scoring feats with victory over Southport fans.

The team has enjoyed some high-scorng wins recently and did the same again in this first meeting between the two sides at Peel Park.

Stanley took the lead on 11 minutes when wonder kid Liam Smith slotted in Stanley's first of the day after rounding the keeper.

Three minutes later, Neal Golding continued his great season with a class goal to make it 2-0. The euphoria in the Reds camp did not last long, however, as first on 21 then on 25 minutes, Southport scored goals through poor defending.

But the pressure was eased on 33 minutes when Stanley captain Mick Claire slotted home from the penalty spot after an over zealous tackle by the Southport defence.

Tireless Glen Barnes cracked one into the top corner of the net on 42 minutes to make it 4-2 and that would have been the score at half time if it had not been for the goal of the day. Centre half Steven Bentham, landlord of the Crown pub, took a free kick from the half way line and struck the ball with venom past the hapless Southport keeper to make it 5-2.

The second half started as the first had ended with a Stanley goal, Smith again the scorer with a lob over the keeper.

At 6-2 the Stanley boss Stephen Lowe decided to try out some of the younger members of his squad. The new players held out well but it was the visitors who scored on 62 and 77 minutes to make it 6-4. More changes followed and Mark Graham slotted home the final goal.

Brian Thoburn was voted man of the match for Stanley and both teams are looking forward to the rematch.
