STANLEY boss John Coleman has called on his team to reproduce their cup form and turn on the style in League Two.

The Reds are looking for their first league points after losing 1-0 to Aldershot in the season opener last Saturday.

But a stunning display in the Carling Cup midweek to Championship side Wolves has given Coleman plenty of food for thought - despite his side losing 3-2 in extra-time.

Stanley travel to League One relegated side Port Vale tomorrow looking to get off the mark in League Two.

"You always want to get points on the board as quickly as possible," said Coleman, who has now chalked up 501 league and cup games in his 10 years in charge of the Reds - 393 league games.

"We know it will be tough at Port Vale but there were some big performances against Wolves and the players have set themselves a standard now for the rest of the league campaign.

"You hope all the players will take confidence from Tuesday’s performance although you can never judge players - they are a strange breed.

"Just when you think you get to know them and think you have cracked it in this game, it turns around and bites you on the backside.

"So I will just take each game as it comes but we want the energy and work-rate we displayed on Tuesday and the players coming off the pitch like they did at Molineux - with their tongues hanging out and muscles aching.

"And the thing which particularly impressed me was the commitment that the lads showed against a team who are a very good side. We need to show that in the league and we will get some clean sheets. That performance should hopefully bode well for the future."

Coleman admitted the goals were welcome with Paul Mullin and Ian Craney getting off the mark for the season at the Championship side.

"We did extra finishing on Monday and it has paid off. It was pleasing for us to score two goals as it has been something we have been concerned about.

"I was relieved for Paul but if their strikers are worth millions, Paul must be worth that too! Wolves were very complimentary about him on Tuesday night.

"And Ian finished well - he is a talent. He is sometimes frustrated that he can’t make the difference in a game he would like too but he is a very good footballer and one of the best players in League Two, in my opinion.

"And Jamie Clarke is settling in from Blackburn. It is only early days yet and you can’t expect too much but he is a good footballer and him and Mullers are getting used to the way each other plays."

Coleman continued: "The other thing which pleased me at Wolves was that we showed a solidity at the back.

"We won’t brush aside the fact they we give Wolves too many chances and we know that is something we will have to work on but, in the main, we did throw our bodies in where it hurt and we showed a solidity which we will have to try and build on.

"I know a lot of people have been saying Phil Edwards was Man of the Match and he was superb but, for me, Chris King was.

"I thought he was excellent. He hasn’t surprised me in his step up to the league - he has a great attitude, a good physique, is an intelligent player, strong and a left footer. Hopefully it can continue."

Defender Colin Murdock (calf) could have played on Tuesday but the Reds decided not to risk it while Andy Procter (ankle) failed a late fitness test but both are expected back tomorrow.

Robbie Williams, though, will sit out Port Vale as he is banned for one game following his 120th minute dismissal for a second yellow card at Wolves.

Meanwhile, Coleman’s suspension has ended after two games sat in the stands following a sending off last season against Chesterfield.

"I am glad it was over. It was frustrating being in the stands on Tuesday night. You have got to watch what you say and it will be nice to get back in the dug-out."

He is still in the market for players with striker Fola Onibuje signed on non-contract terms.

"I have one or two irons in the fire for widemen. I don’t expect it to happen before the weekend but certainly in the next week or two," he said.

STANLEY’S reserves are in action at Preston North End on Wednesday (ko 7pm).
