Mill Hill Under 13 boys were victorious at the Tesco Cup Northern Regional Final in Manchester last weekend.

The boys, who triumphed in a closely-fought competition, will now represent Northern England at the national final of the grassroots football tournament, to be held at Derby County on Sunday.

Mill Hill were unbeaten during the group stages and were also victorious in their semi-final before reaching the final where they defeated South Shields Whiteleas, who were representing Durham FA, 1-0.

Former Manchester United defender David May attended the event in Manchester and chose Mill Hill’s Raheem Saddique as the forward of the tournament for his standout performances.

Team-mates Joshua Pearce and Daniel Bennett picked up the best goalkeeper and best defender awards.

Mill Hill team manager Jason Close said: "We’re delighted the lads have got through to the national finals. It’s an honour to be representing Lancashire and we came up against a number of good teams. The lads have worked hard and this is a great reward for them."

May added: "The Tesco Cup Northern Final has been a great event.

"I’ve been really impressed with the standard of football and the tournament has been played in a fantastic spirit. I wish Mill Hill the best of luck in the national final."

Across the three competing age groups – Under 13 boys and Under 14 and Under 16 girls – 36 teams from 13 county FAs participated in a round robin format, followed by the final.

More than 3,600 teams from England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales entered the initial stages of the 2011 Tesco Cup, which will culminate in a UK final, to be held at Birmingham City on Sunday, May 22.
