Peter Murphy knows Stanley need to exert some home rule in the run-up to the busy Christmas period.

The Reds face Wycombe on Saturday and Plymouth the weekend after and the defender has targeted six points to propel 17th-placed Stanley back up among League Two’s play-off chasers.

Stanley have lost their last two league encounters – 2-1 at home to Rotherham and 1-0 at Burton on Sunday.

"We have got two home games in the league now and, the way the table is, six points would get us right back up there," said the 22-year-old, right, who has 102 appearances for the Crown Ground club.

"We haven’t been playing badly but results have just not gone our way and we know we need to turn this around and we have the players that are capable of doing that.

"We have played some of the top teams like Southend, Cheltenham and Port Vale and we have beaten them so we know we can match them.

"That’s the frustrating thing. We should have beaten Rotherham the other week and then at Burton on Sunday, we dominated the game but couldn’t create clear cut chances.

"Now we have to learn from those games and hopefully put a little run together and move up the table.

"The gaffer (Leam Richardson) has come in and changed things slowly and we want to be successful.

"We are all behind him and we know we are not far off picking up some wins and moving upwards. We have a lot of games now in a short space of time and we hope we can make an impression."

Richardson confirmed that there would be some movement in the January transfer market with the four current loanees at Stanley moving back to their parent clubs once their current deals expire.

"Danny Schofield’s loan spell ends in a couple of days and he’s going back, Matty Whichelow’s ends the week after and he’ll be returning to his parent club," said Richardson. "Karl Sheppard’s deal also ends in January and Piero Mingoia’s ends in mid-January.

"They’ve all been smashing while they have been here and we’re thankful to their clubs for letting them come and give us a lift.

"But in January we’ll look to strengthen in other areas."

Ambitious Richardson has been in charge for 10 games and, while Stanley are in the lower half of the table, he admitted the close knit league – with the Reds seven points off seventh place – still gives them plenty of confidence and belief that they can get up into the top placings.

"We’re in a position now where you look to six or seven teams above you and there are three or four points’ difference," continued the manager.

"It’s important that we do keep in and around those teams to try to kick on through Christmas and after.

"We’ve got two home games and six points will make a difference.

"But, at the minute, I don’t think the league position is that important – it’s the points you’ve got.

"Every club’s the same though. You’ve got to look forward as much as you can and try to hang onto the play-offs as much as you can because in January you can try to add to the squad for the better and kick on from there."

Richardson admitted he thought Burton was a chance lost as the Reds dominated possession but couldn’t turn it into goals.

"Although Sunday wasn’t a bad performance in a sense, we did lose the game and that’s the stat that everybody looks at.

"Possession, chances and crosses, they don’t win you the game, you need to put the ball in the back of the net and we need to be more effective in what we do at both ends of the pitch."

Richardson has been working with his young defence as they need to learn from the errors which have proved costly this season – and not make the same ones again.

"That’s important in general in football," he said. "When I was growing up it’s how you develop.

"If you constantly make the same mistakes you end up not playing football so it’s important for the lads – regardless of how young they are and where they are in the standing of the team – they do need to progress and they do need to learn.

"And it’s important when they do make those mistakes they do learn from it and eradicate them from the game.

"The more they do that they become a better player, they become a better acquisition for the team and we’ll be able to push on a lot stronger."

Right back Dean Winnard returns from a one game suspension after picking up five yellow cards and missing the Burton loss.

Striker James Beattie is fighting to be fit after picking up an injury in the warm-up on Sunday.
