ACCRINGTON Stanley Ultras Fans team were crowned Northern Premier Supporters League Champions to make it a double-winning season.

The Reds had already picked up the League Cup after beating local rivals Barrow 3-0 in the cup final at Holker Street. But they wanted the league title to make sure they were crowned the best fans' team in the North West out of the 10 teams entering the league in its inaugural year.

The pressure was on as the fans had to win their final match against title challengers Barrow, who were in second spot behind leaders Stanley, but the Reds were behind within a minute at Wilsons.

Martin Fearon, however, then steadied the nerves before an own goal gave Stanley a 2-1 lead. A stunning strike from the tireless Glen Barnes sent the Wilson's crowd wild before Barrow came back with a 40 yard effort to make it 4-2 at half-time.

Stanley manager Steve Lowe introduced Martin Shurmer up front after the break and it immediately paid off as his combination play resulted in a deserved goal for Liam Smith. Then Shurmer scored one of his own before a corner from Barnes was latched onto by Brian Thoburn with a bullet header to make it 6-2.

Shurmer was the one to finish off the league campaign with a top class goal to make it 7-2 and seal the title and the trophy for the Reds.

Captain Stephen Bentham allowed Brian Thoburn, who had been captain for most of the season, to collect the cup.

Stanley Ultras would like to thank Fountains Support Services, Moncaster Wire products, Accrington Stanley, Intack Self Drive, www.kipax.com and Barbara and Benny at the Crown for their sponsorship and support.
