Mount Carmel pupil Becky Daly has certainly bowled them over after being selected to represent England at ten pin bowling.

The 13-year-old is hoping for a knock-out when she competes for her country at the World Sports Festival in Vienna, Austria in July this year.

The World Sports Festival is anticipating attracting 6,000 athletes from 12 countries including the USA, Germany, France and Italy. Athletes compete at two levels - Under 14 and Under 18, girls and boys.

Becky, who lives in Accrington, bowls for Burnley Youth Bowling Club at AMF Burnley and also for Lancashire at Under 14, Under 16 and Under 18 levels.

Her dad Les, her instructor at Burnley YBC, said: "She has been bowling for just over three years now and is considered by the country’s top coaches as a very bright prospect in the sport."

Burnley YBC has gone from strength to strength and is run by volunteers to encourage young people between the ages of five and 23 to take up the sport of ten pin bowling.

Les continued: "We run a league with two divisions which the youngsters compete in every Saturday. We also enter the bowlers in inter-club and national competitions from Poole in Dorset to Sunderland in Durham. We presently have six bowlers who are part of the Lancashire squads."

And Becky is pinning her hopes on a striking up a solid England show.
