BRANDON Hargreaves was a golden boy after picking up first place at the Martial Arts Illustrated's Open Championships in Manchester.

The competition was tough as the martial arts event was open to fighters who had ten wins under their belts – and not for novices.

Around 60 competitors challenged in six different categories with Fit to Fight Kick-Boxing gym battler Brandon, 11, coming out on top in the Under 30kg boys event.

"We were relieved for Brandon as he is small for his age and usually, when it is in age group categories, he always had to fight boys who are much bigger than him," said coach Billy Battrick, of Fit to Fight Kick Boxing gym on Back Wellington Street, Accrington.

"This time he matched them for weight and he competed well.

"As a gym we have got used to winning belts but we don’t often win medals – it’s our first gold medal despite having 10 champions at the gym over the years."

The gym also picked up two silver medals with Daniel Battrick, 11, just missing out on a gold in a close final in the 14-Years and Under Boys category.

And Steven Barnes won silver in the mens category after coming through three fights to reach the prestigious final.

l THE club are holding a Martial Arts tournament at the New Era on Sunday 25 October from 11am-6pm. Tickets are £5 for spectators and there will be a range of fighters from juniors and beginners to adults.
