YOUNG sports enthusiasts in Hyndburn will soon be able to step onto the coaching ladder thanks to Hyndburn Borough Council's new "Step Into Coaching" scheme.

The scheme is aimed at giving the young basic skills and confidence to volunteer and assist in the Council's Sport and Community Recreation team's wide programme of activities for 2003.

These include the Lancashirte Youth Games, The Wide World of Sports 2003 and the Hyndburn Cricket Festival.

The scheme will enable youngsters aged 14 to 16 to attend courses in First Aid, as well as coaching and officiating in various sports.

Thanks to funding, the courses will cost no more than £4, some as little as £2, rather than the £25-£30 they might normally cost.

Places are still available for all courses including Athletics, Cricket, Rugby, Netball, Badminton, Football and First Aid but are being booked up quickly.

The first course, An Introduction to Cricket Umpiring, starts at Moorhead High School, Accrington, on Wednesday 22 January at 4.30pm.
