GLENN Lord proved he had nerves of steel at the 'Metal Mania Open Stock Car Championships' on Sunday.

The Great Harwood driver was taking part in the annual 'Unlimited Open Championships' for stock cars and bangers.

It was held in atrocious rainy conditions with top drivers from all over the country and Ireland competing at Warton Raceway in Cumbria.

Glenn, who last clinched the title in 2003, won both his qualifying heats and came out on top against 15 others in the final to race to the open title and be crowned champion.

"It was a great day's racing even though the weather was terrible," admitted Glenn.

While Glenn was celebrating, Accrington's Phil Clegg had a lucky escape. He was coming second in his race - and then it all went wrong.

"He had the most spectacular rollover, end over end, and we were all relieved when he walked away in one piece," said Glenn.

"But these cars are built to a high standard and can take a lot of punishment and I am sure he will be at the next meeting."

It did leave his car thoroughly dented as can been seen on www.wartononline.com .

The next meeting will be held at Warton on Easter Sunday, April 8, with a noon start.
