IT'S down to the last 32 players in the Observer Golf Shield and two recent champions are still in the competition.

Last year's winner Aaron Duxbury and 2002 winner Gary Byrne are challenging to pick up the crown again.

But it could be anyone's year and Ian Nuttall is determined to give the competition everything he has got.

The Accrington golfer saw off his 16-year-old son Chris in the last round - made worse for Chris because he got to the last eight last year.

"I have reached the quarter-finals but have had 10 years away from the competition because of work commitments," said Ian. "I watched Chris get to the last eight last year so I thought I would give it another go."

"When we were drawn against each other, there was a lot of banter at the club. I don't know if it got to Chris as I was five up after eight holes but he is a talented golfer and plays off five. I am off nine so it was anyone's game."

The final score was 3 & 2 and Ian now faces Baxenden's John Higgins at home.

"I have played some good golfers in the last rounds in Dave Byrom and Chris so now I have just got to keep fighting!"

Another huge match is between Accrington's Jason Ashworth and Great Harwood's Ian Garraway.
