JASON Ashworth was crowned Observer Golf Champion 2005 after overcoming fellow Accrington GC member Paul Billington 4&2 on Sunday.

The 20-year-old, whose handicap is one, held his nerve to claw back eight shots from Paul and lift the coveted shield at Rossendale GC.

"It was a good feeling to win," said the Accrington GC assistant greenkeeper. "I knew it would be hard giving Paul eight shots but I just tried to stay as relaxed as possible and played well on the day."

Paul, 48, who plays off 12, was gracious in defeat as he felt it was just an honour to get to the last two out of the 220 who started the competition.

"Jason is an inspiration to all junior golfers," said Paul.

"He will be a good ambassador for the Observer Golf Competition and could be one of only a few who successfully defends his title."
