Observer Golf Shield

FIRST TIME Observer golfer Lee Baxendale thought he was only going to get a short stay in this year's competition.

The Green Haworth golfer, with a handicap of 23, was five down with six to play against Guy Parkinson of Rishton.

But he won the next five holes and then beat his opponent on the 19th hole.

"It is my first time in the competition as I have only been playing a couple of years and I thought I was down and out," said Lee. "But I came back well and I am pleased."

Accrington's young golfer Ryan Foster also had to stage a comeback in his clash. He was giving opponent, Rossendale's W Trickett, 12 shots and was two down with two holes to play. He ended up winning the 17th and 18th and clinching victory on the 19th.

The first round has been drawn and results have to be in the Observer office by Monday 29 May. The draw for the next round is at Accrington on Tuesday May 30.
