MOORHEAD High School boys were crowned Hyndburn and Ribble Valley Schools Cross-County Champions - with the school finishing in second spot overall.

It was the first time in many years that the boys raced to glory while the girls finished in the runners-up spot out of 11 schools taking part.

It was a competitive event at Wilson's Playing Fields with Moorhead having two individual champions.

In the Year Seven boys race, Moorhead produced the Hyndburn and Ribble Valley District Champion in Steven Astbury.

The 11-year-old led the race from the front and destroyed the opposition finishing well in front of the second placed athlete.

And, in the Year 10/11 combined boys race, Moorhead enjoyed more success. They again had the champion in Sean Williams.

He crossed the line to take the title, running an excellent race. He composed himself in the first lap and moved up into a commanding position in the last lap before sprinting to victory.

Meanwhile, in the Year Eight and Nine combined race, the Moorhead boys team finished as champions.

The first five runners, which make up the team, all ran out of their skin and they all finished inside the top ten, with a combined total of 35 points.

They were Leon Walmsley, Jack English, Liam Grudgeon, James Dunne and Tom Ford.

These five will now go on to represent the district in the Lancashire Schools Championship.

Elsewhere, in the Year Seven girls, Sarah Picovance finished in third spot while Tess Parkinson raced into a respectable seventh spot.

Another fine performance came from Cleo Calverley, a Year 10 girl, who finished in third spot in her race.

Head of Boys PE, Andy Kelly, said: "The success of all our athletes in the cross-country championships is down to a number of factors.

"One of them is the dedication shown by both staff and pupils to our extra curricular programme.

"More than 90 pupils and 12 staff have been involved in the Schools "Coppice Running Scheme".

"Another is the competition in the school inter-form races which has replicated race day conditions.

"And the school has also worked hard to develop links with Hyndburn Athletic Club which have also helped to play a role in developing a number of the school's athletes."

He added: "The school has come a long way in the past four years in terms of sporting success.

"It is producing athletes who are representing their district as well as the county in a number of area.

"We wish all the district runners well for the forthcoming Lancashire Cross-Country championships."
