CHURCH bowler Nick Westwell has decided to all it a day after 38 years at the Blackburn Road Club.

The 47-year-old has been suffering with a knee injury recently and struggled bowling against Lowerhouse on Sunday.

He has seen a doctor who has told him it is a build up of wear and tear over the years and there is some cartilage damage.

"I have decided to retire," said Westwell.

"I have hardly ever been injured but I got off a flight after coming back from the Ashes and felt pain in my knee.

"I have been to see doctors and thought it was getting better but when I went to bowl I felt it again. It just didn't feel right and I couldn't put any pressure on my left knee.

"There is a little bit of sadness there but there is also some relief as I have been saying I will retire for 10 years!"

He made his first Xi debut in 1975, his best figures were 9-83 and took 778 wickets in his career.
