ACCRINGTON have boosted their ranks - and have high hopes of continuing to make progress this season.

They have signed batsman Brian Heywood from Todmorden, Mohsin Ahmed has returned to Thorneyholme Road and they have snapped up teenage sensation Toby Bulcock from Baxenden.

"Brian has 30 years of experience so he should be a big help because we are largely a young side," said captain Matt Wilson.

"Toby is destined for bigger things and I don't know how long we can keep him so we will just have to see what happens.

"It is a coup for us to get him though and Mohsin has returned and we are pleased about that."

Accrington finished ninth last season after years of struggling in the bottom half of the table.

And their prolific pro Nishit Shetty is returning to the club this season. The Indian amassed 1159 runs last summer and took 47 wickets.

"It is great Nish is coming back and he did so well last season. He did tail off a bit towards the end of the season but you can't expect him to get 100 runs every week!

"We are still waiting to hear if he is available in the first match as he is in a cup final back home but at least we may only miss him for one game - some clubs are missing their professionals for a lot longer."

With Shetty in tow, Accrington are hoping to improve on their ninth spot.

"In the last five or six years we have finished near the bottom so ninth was good last year and we want another top half of the table finish. And, like everyone, a good cup run.

"I think holders Burnley will be strong again but anyone can beat anyone on their day in this league. If you get a good start and your pro hits a purple patch you stand a chance."

Accrington's first game is at one of the title favourites Ramsbottom. "A nice easy start for us! But you have got to play them at some stage so we can get it out of way," added Wilson.
