PAUL Biggins had to beat the weather and his opponent to clinch the 2006 Observer Golf Shield.

The 47-year-old Accrington golfer overcame two times winner Gary Byrne at Whalley Golf Club on Sunday - and both had to contend with the driving rain and strong wind.

And it came down to the wire with Paul holding his nerve on the 18th hole to win the Shield for the first time.

"I am thrilled to bits," said Paul.

"I don't think we saw the best of either player because of the conditions.

"It was a real battle but the final was played in a good spirit and, fortunately for me, I came through."

"It's wonderful."
