RISHTON CC have signed Sri Lankan Test player Kumar Dharmasena for next season's Musbury Fabrics Lancashire League campaign.

The 33-year-old is an all-rounder with plenty of experience and he has played Test cricket this year. Dharmasena has chalked up 21 Test matches and 141 one day internationals.

"His agent rang me about six weeks ago to say he was on the market," said Rishton chairman Rod Simpson. "He had interest from a number of other clubs but he had heard of Rishton's reputation and was keen to come here.

"It is good for us to have a professional with experience as I think it is what we need."

He is an off-spinner and right hand bat but has been involved in some controversy.

His career came to a standstill after the Oval Test of 1998, when the International Cricket Council investigated his bowling action.

However, he was cleared to play again by the Sri Lankan board in July 2000, and has been on the fringes of the one-day side ever since.
