FOOTBALL fever is set to spread across Hyndburn after a new sign went up in honour of the world's most famous non- league football club - Accrington Stanley!

Stanley, currently sitting pretty at the top of the Unibond Premier Division, have had their name emblazoned across a sign greeting motorists entering the borough.

The sign - one of two being provided by Hyndburn Council - has been erected at the top of Burnley Road near Huncoat. Another is set to be placed in Manchester Road, Baxenden.

Stanley chairman Eric Whalley said: "It's great to see the signs finally up. Council leader Ian Ormerod made a promise to us about 12 months ago that we would get the signs but with his illness it's taken a bit longer than we would have thought. It's great to see the club recognised and shows that at least somebody is appreciating what we are doing."

Councillor Ormerod said: "The name Accrington Stanley is famous the world over. This season they are certainly a team of which we can all be proud, so I'm delighted that at long last we have recognition of the name and rich tradition of Stanley in these Accrington signs."
