ACCRINGTON Stanley's promotion to the Nationwide Conference has benefited local charity Maundy Relief.

Each year, the FA Community Shield - between the FA Cup winners and Premier League champions - raises thousands of pounds for community based charities.

This season, as members of the Nationwide Conference, Stanley were entitled to nominate a local charity to receive a share of the Community Shield Fund. And Stanley chose Maundy Relief to donate £7,900 to.

Chairman Eric Whalley said: "We are delighted to find ourselves in a position to help Maundy Relief. Everyone at the charity does a great job working with local people and we are just pleased to be able to pass the money on to a group that we know will use it wisely and get the maximum benefit from it.

"It is a great example of the football club working with local groups to benefit the community, an area that we are looking to continue to develop as the club progresses."
