Pioneer 79 swimmer Shannon McGinty, 16, competed in the British Gas Synchronised Swimming Championship.

For the first time she contested the Solo, on day one competing alongside Commonwealth silver medallist Jenna Randall, last year’s silver medallist Sarah Spears as well as six members of the Great Britain Junior Synchronised Swimming team who were all representing their clubs.

The solo event is contested over a two day period and is scrutinised by seven judges marking technical merit and seven judges marking artistic impression.

Day one is a knock-out round where the swimmers perform a technical solo routine which must contain six pre-prescribed technical elements. The top 12 highest scorers progress to day two where they perform a free solo routine.

In round one Shannon was on top form. She swam a dazzling technical routine to the track ‘I’m still here’ by John Rzeznik, her first ever solo routine at the championships and scored a total 59.09 points qualifying her for day two of the contest.

On day two Shannon was hoping to maintain the same standard in the free routine. She performed a stunning routine to the theme track from Spiderman movie.

The judges agreed and awarded her 59.60 points.

When both sets of points were combined the total ranked Shannon 11th in the Club Championship and 12th in the Open Championship.

Shannon is a successful member of the Pioneer 79 Regional Swimming Squad, and trains approximately 16 hours per week – 12 hours swimming with P79, as well as four hours of Syncronised swimming training based at Preston.
