High profile fighters Rocky Fielding and Chris Eubank Jnr are in Accrington boxer Luke Blackledge’s sights as he continues to bulldoze his way through the British rankings.

The light-heavyweight’s trainer Jason Curtis, of Kokoro Gym on Dale Street, is confident that a Central Area title contest with Frank Warren’s unbeaten super-middleweight protégé  Fielding –  last year’s Prizefighter victor – will happen in the near future.

And Curtis has also targeted a lucrative bout with Chris Eubank Jnr, though that seems less likely to transpire at the moment.

The 22-year-old middleweight, son of the former world middleweight and world super-middleweight champion, only has successes against Kirill Psonko and Jason Ball on his professional record to date.

“I think the fight with Rocky Fielding will come off sometime in the near future,” claimed Curtis.

“Chris Eubank Jnr is in the same weight category as Luke and that’s a fight we would really like. He’s a high profile name and I think Luke would beat him easily.

“I don’t think his camp would take it just yet because he’s only won two from two and they’ll want to look after him early on.

“We will fight anyone that’s about. He’s certainly ready for an area title and after that we can move on. He’s got a big future in the sport.”

The belief within Blackledge’s camp spiralled after the 21-year-old maintained his unblemished record with a ninth professional triumph over  Matthew Barney in Leicestershire.

The fight went the distance of six rounds though referee Robert Chalmers announced a 60-53 points victory, suggesting a comfortable win for Blackledge – although he did end up needing seven stitches  after an accidental clash of heads in the last round.

“He’s won nine fights from nine now,” said Curtis, himself an EBF British middleweight title holder.

“It was an away show but Luke won every round which was great.

“Matthew had won 26 from 35 contests so he was never going to be a push over.

“He’s a previous British Masters champion and had gone 12 rounds with world champion Carl Froch in the past. This is his biggest and most significant win in terms of opponent.

“The only negative was that Luke got caught with a head butt in the last minute of the final round and had to have seven stitches.

“He has a 28 day suspension now because of it but we wouldn’t have taken a fight within that time anyway.”

Blackledge’s progression has been relentless, his desire intrepid.

His formidable form has got people in the business talking, especially now that he’s ranked number 13 in Britain.

“He’s ranked in the top 15 in Britain now and he'll just keep on climbing,” said Curtis.

“I imagine the fights will start coming to us now.

“He’s ready for a title shot any time soon but we need to make sure that we take the right fights at the right time.

“I’m confident he can beat anyone put in front of him.”
