ACCRINGTON captain Matt Wilson's aim is to improve on the two league wins his side chalked up last season as they propped up the Lancashire League.

And he is confident they can do that, especially with their two new additions.

Prolific bowler David Ormerod has returned to the club from Bacup and will be Wilson's vice captain.

And they have a new professional with Indian all-rounder Nishit Shetty joining the club.

"David will bring experience - he knows what it is all about and we are predominantly a young side so hopefully he will bring some of the younger lads on," said the captain.

And 32-year-old Shetty replaces New Zealander Tama Canning.

Shetty, who plays his first-class cricket for Mumbai, arrives after two successful summers in the Bolton League.

The left-arm spinner and left-handed top-order batsman passed 1,000 runs and 50 wickets in each of his two seasons at Greenmount.

"When you get a new pro, you tend to want to impress," said Wilson, whose side equalled an unwanted record of 24 league losses last season.

"With Tama he had been here a couple of years and you can rest on your laurels but a new professional can help the team.

"Hopefully, too, if he does well it will rub off on the rest of the team.

"We only got two league wins last season and we don't want to break our own record! If we win as many as we lose, we will be happy."

While Accrington think a league title is over-ambitious, a cup win is certainly not.

"We want to win a cup and have a good run. We know we can beat anyone on our day, it is just we can't do it week in week out."

And Wilson is hoping to spring one or two surprises on the title favourites.

"I think the title will be the usual suspects of Lowerhouse, Haslingden and Ramsbottom," said the captain. "We are just hoping we can pull off a couple of shocks."

And the skipper has his own target - he got around 480 runs last season.

"I always aim for 500 so I want to do that this season," he added.
